Motorists who got caught speeding in Melbourne, Florida, on Christmas Day got a bittersweet surprise from police in the form of warnings, tickets and scratch-off lottery games.

According to FloridaToday.com, Melbourne police officers used their own money to purchase the lottery games in an effort to spread some holiday cheer while at the same time keeping the roads safe.

By afternoon, more than 30 scratch-off game tickets had been handed out to motorists who got pulled over. When asked if any of those scratch-off tickets were big winners, Sgt. Jamie Rocque replied, “I don’t know, but we wish them well.”
