Stephens Tabbed MEC Defensive Player of the Week

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. - West Liberty's Shon Stephens has been named the the Mountain East Conference Defensive Player of the Week after his four-interception performance in Thursday's win over Alderson Broaddus.

The four picks were a Mountain East Conference single game record and were the most by an NCAA D2 player since SW Minnesota State defensive back J.D. Jackson-Hanchett picked off 4 passes in a 51-35 victory at Minnesota State-Moorhead on Sept. 7, 2017.

The last two interceptions for Stephens came on back-to-back possessions as Alderson Broaddus was vying to tie the game. With 2:20 left in the game, he intercepted a game-tying pass in the endzone. Then, Stephens put the game in the books with a 52-yard pick-six putting WLU up 30-17 with 30 seconds to play.

Stephens also made three solo tackles in the home and conference opening victory. He now has six interceptions on the season, just two games in, including a pick-six in each of the Hilltoppers wins.

The MEC Weekly Awards are presented by The Health Plan.

West Liberty travels to Notre Dame College this weekend for its first Saturday game of the season. Kickoff from South Euclid is set for 12 noon.
